Swimming, Warendorf and ILSe

The off season has almost come to an end, only a couple more weeks that include Christmas and New Year's eve and the training for season 2012 begins again. During this off season I kept on swimming and with my student swimming squad we decided to race at the Dutch National Swimming champs, since these also were Fina Olympic Trails a big representation of 'famous' swimmers was present, even for the relay in which we had entered (4x 100 medley, 4x 100 Free style and 4x 200 freestyle). For the Medley relay the team was set, but for the 4x 200 we had to swim our own trails. So about 2 weeks ago we all entered an event with the same time so we could all race each other, fortunately I did qualify myself for this event. So I was in the 4x 200 relay, but for the 4x 100 there had been a little talk, since 3 of the boys are really quicker than me, but number 4 and I are quite the same. But since we entered into the final heats for both the freestyle relays the call was quite easily made, he would swim the 4x 100 freestyle and I would watch and in the 4x 200 the roles where reversed.

But during the off season, the Dutch federation always seems to organize the Dutch Pool LifeSaving Championships as well, so under-trained and not prepared 'we' (the most members of the squad that went to the Europeans) entered the event. Only to find out afterwards that it had been used for the selection for the German Cup, gladly I still did swim good enough to qualify for the team.

At the German Cup in Warendorf, I did swim alright and had a blast. But for me Warendorf was not about the racing, as most of you know in Europe there have been some changes to the program for the European LifeSaving Championships and the sport committee did advice the ILSe board to go in a certain direction. But only recently (second weekend of November), there had been a meeting on the world stage ILS, and here had been decided that untill 2016 no changes will be made to the program for the World LifeSaving Championships (the Rescue event). Even though many would deny it, secretly it was the goal of some membernations of the ILSe to influence the ILS to also change it program for the Worlds. But since this has been decided the current plans and ideas seem useless. In Warendorf I had to explain this to the other athletes that are involved or interested in this, by this my side program on the Pool deck was for me more important then my swimming program in the Pool.

Now all I can do is hope that the ILSe changes its mind, and that some members of the ILSe board overstep their own shadows and follow the line that the majority of the athletes wants and what is suitable for the rest of the World.

This time trainingsession:

Running, a long and easy run in the morning (before breakfast= BBR). It does not only kickstart your day, but it also adds to your physical condition and strengthens your body!

preparations for 2012

Since the Europeans I have had some time off from training and I just started my off-season training program. From now until December the focus is not on training, while I still am doing it, but on my study. I really do have to finish it, I have been around (on the University) for over 6 years now and that is really long enough! And if I finish this year I do have the possibility to go back Down Under again, to fulfill a dream... Namely to race and finishing the Coolangatta Gold, it is not my type of race since I am more of a 'sprinter' but it is just a challenge  and accomplishment to finish the 46,65 K course. I am more of a one round around the cans type, that can manage a 'normal' Ironman (Oceanman), but that is already a challenge!

So currently I am focusing on my courses, but that does not mean that I do nothing with my sport or training. During the LifeSaving off-season I do keep on swimming and paddling my craft. But not as much as in the (pre-)season and I do add some other sports activities to the program. Therefore I recently bought an ATB, to go cycling and biking with friends even when there is some snow/ice on the road. And since I am going Australia to do the Gold I do have to extend my training sessions, and on the bike you can quite easily go far a 5 hour trip. Doing this in a pool, on a board or ski is hard and running would be impossible because off risks of injuries.

Next to this Koen de Haan (Trivelo), Robin den Oudsten and I have been busy with the start-up of a MultiSportsTrainingscentre in Eindhoven, we will combine a LifeSavingTeam and a TriathlonTeam on the campus and facilities of the Eindhoven University of Technology. So far we have 10 athletes willing to work with us and thsi includes 2 World Champions in Lifesaving and medal winners on European and World LifeSaving level and the Triathlete's are internationally active and have the potential to win medals on (inter)national level or have already done this.

This time's trainingtip is, during the off-season fins a sports activity that enables you to keep fit but is not specific to LifeSaving. This works refreshing and when the(pre-)season starts again you are ready and eager to get started!!

European Championships & LDOM

The European Championships where held in Alicante Spain and for the first time since I have been competing at these championships (since 2003) the 200m obstacle race, 4x 50m obstacle race, beach sprint and the beach relay have been scratched. I am not happy with this, and I know that with me many more athlete's aren't!
But all in all the championships are still big enough to be properly conducted, so we raced in Alicante Spain. We started on Friday in the pool, for me and for the Dutch team this wasn't the best day. We got disqualified on the 4x 25 manikin relay, on a disputable rule and by a referee that was NOT in the correct position to judge. But they held put, sadly for us as we had a chance on medals! Individually I started on the 200 Super-lifesaver, where I swam a new Best time (2.21,5) but I still haven't broken the 2.20 mark... And I also did the 50m manikin carry, here I swam an 34. That is not good, my best time is 31,7...
The second day of the championships was also in the pool, I had to swim the 50m free in the medley relay. We did ok and finished 4th, we had some bad luck in the transition from 3 to 4, but the lads solved it professionally. But with this we blew the chance on a medal, with some mathematics we figured a silver medal would have been possible.... And individually I swam the Rescue Medley, but since the pool had a drop on 17m, the referee's had decided to put the manikin right in front of it, so records could not be broken (to my view, it was actually a set back in time, you swim faster under water then carrying the manikin), I still managed to swim under my PB and under the Dutch record in 1.09,3, but it does not could for the statistics. So all in all we had some bad luck in the team events, specially because the line throw went wrong as well, but I personally swam well.
Day 3 was on the beach and on a Sunday, I raced the Board and Ski individually and was the fin swimmer in the Rescue Tube rescue race, We finished 7th in the RTRR and I made the final on the Board, but I did not really push myself since I knew my chances where on the Ski race. And this final was straight after it, with a good start I managed to get away second fastest, with David Loosen from Germany and during the race around the cans Julien Lalanne from France came by and James from Great Britain and I raced each other for the 3rd spot, since the judges couldn't see a difference between Jimmy and I so we finished equally 3rd.... So I won my first individual MEDAL on any championship ever!! Day 4 on the beach, the Monday,  I did the Oceanman and the Oceanman relay, on the Oceanman I finished 9th and in the relay we finished 6th.
Unfortunately for the event Alicante is positioned at the Mediterranean and not at a beach with waves, this was in favor of the flat water swimmers, but sadly the ILSE sport commission wants it this way... They say that in this way everybody is able to do and finish all events.

The week after I got home (with most of the team), we conducted the LDOM, a Long Distance Ocean(wo)Man in Roermond at Koers Zuid. This event wasn't just a 21k Oceanman (2k swim-6k board-9k ski and 4k run) but also an event for the under 14, they did a 750 surf race, a 2k board race, a 2k run and a 2k Oceanman (500 swim- 750 board and 1k run). This event was a success, thanks to the weather and the over 50 athlete's that took part in it! As a season finisher we also finished off with a BBQ!
Based on all the positive comments and the big number of athlete's it seems that it will be repeated next year!

Training tip:

Recovery, after a long period of training and racing you need to recover. I am currently doing this by not training for almost 3 weeks. I will do some events here and there, but not to much or to win it. And after these 3 weeks I will start easy training sessions and do some other things as well, as for instance riding a bike or surfing. This keeps your head clear, since you do not have to go back to the pool...

Lifesaving.nl pool event & Dutch Surf Champs

Well lately I have been putting in the final touches to my preparation to the European Championships in Alicante. Since this weekend I am tapering and the weekends before we had the Lifesaving.nl pool event and the Dutch Surf Championships. The Lifesaving.nl pool event is being hosted by the 2 guys behind the webpage lifesaving.nl and is conducted in the 6 lane 50m pool in Breda. This year I decided to do the 50m Manikin carry and the 200m Superlifesaver, since these events are my focus events for the EC, in the pool. I did a hard week of training before the event and was really pleased with my times, did a 33.9 on the 50m carry, while I just before had finished my 200m SLS in 2.23.someting.
I went of pretty well and lost it on the last part, that was to be expected because of my past workload. And the 50m carry followed about 45minutes later, since I didn't do much sprinting and speed work just yet I was happy with the 33.9...
The plan is that I do these event a little bit faster at the European Championships, at least breaking my PB and for the 200m SLS my aim is to finally break the 2.20 mark. At the European Championships the 100m Rescue Medley is also added to my individual Pool program, and I will also start in the 4x 50m Rescue Rube Relay and the 4x 25m Manikin Relay.

The Dutch Surf Championships were intended to be my final test for the EC, but due to family circumstances I wasn't able to do all the events. The unfortunate death of a close relative of my girlfriend made sure that I hit my bed on the night before the Championships at about 03.00. And then it wasn't even my intention to hit my own bed, but to stay at a campsite close to the Championships about 2 hours drive from home.... In consultation with my girlfriend on the next morning that I decided I would still go to the Championships for the team events and maybe some individual events. To my fortune I was able to do all 3 of the conducted relays, I was the fin swimmer in the Rescue Tube Rescue Race which we won and I paddled the Ski in the Oceanmanrelay and in the Board Rescue I was the patient. In the Oceanmanrelay and the Board Rescue we finished second behind Rb Heythuysen. For the individual events I had entered the Board, Ski, Run-Swim-Run and the Oceanman. To my luck the morning events had to be rescheduled and postponed, due to thunderstorms... And I was able to do the Run-Swim-Run and the Oceanman, in both events I was able to claim the title....

So I guess I am reasonably fit and ready to go! I can't wait to get started with the European Championships....

Training in preparation for EC, Alicante

Hi All,

After the DLRG Cup and Shannon went home, I didn't go to France. My plan was to train hard this week, but that plan got cancelled because I was a bit sick. So I decided to rest it out, before returning to training. Right now I am in my hardest training period, about 2 to 3 session a day and pushing it on speed and endurance. But By next week I will start to rest down into the EC, with one week of easy, then 5 days of hard training again and then into the pre-race taper!

But I didn't only train, I had put myself up for an Art movie. I had to swim in the Dutch Sea (Scheveningen) with empty Oil Barrels. It was interesting to do and experience, but it isn't really my cup of tea. We spend 2 long days on the beach, my hair had to be cut and we had to sit and wait a lot... In a short time I will upload some pictures taken by VARSBAYD Photography. And as soon as I allowed I will put up the movie as well.

This times trainingsession:

Ski,
A long warm up, about 15 to 20 minutes with some speed work included.

Then do 2x 50-40-30-20 double strokes hard out from a start.
The rest is the paddle back to the startline and between the 2 sets you take a little break.

This will be followed by 5 starts with 10 double strokes.

Paddle down for 10 to 15 minutes.
